Webmaster Comment:
The restoration of the Arch was completed during 2001 and was extremely successful. I'll update the photo album on the Whalebone Arch section of the site soon with some shots of the finished article

I enjoyed your account of the origin and restoration of the Whalebone Arch at Bragar. Murdo Morrison who had the arch built at Lakefield was the brother of my great-grandfather Donald Macdonald Morrison, late of Duluth, Minnesota USA. Murdo's brother D.M. (as he was called in the family), often visited Bragar from the USA, as do his descendants. I was in Bragar in 1983 and was glad to hear of the restoration recently from my cousins Mr. Murdo Morrison and his sister, Lady Mary Morrison Macaulay, the current owners of Lakefield and the Whalebone Arch.
I would be happy to hear from anyone who has memories or anecdotes relating to my Morrison family of Bragar, especially of D.M. who was a bard and wrote several of Lewis' popular Gaelic folk songs, including "Eilean Beag Donn a' Chuain" and "Balaich an Iasgaich".

Thanks for the info on this website. I read the account by Angus Murray of the sinking of the Richmond Castle on 4th August 1942 with great interest and sadness. My grandfather - James Marshall - was Chief Cook on board this vessel and unfortunately did not survive to tell his story.
I would be pleased to hear from any Richmond Castle survivors (or thier families).

It is very encouraging to see Bragar and surrounding areas on the internet. I have just discovered this wonderful site and I will browse through it with great interest.
Keep up the good work, and if you wish any contributions from Glasgow please get in touch. Also, feel free to copy any material from my own website which has a lot of Gaelic and ecclesiastical resources.
